Soneva Fushi

The Maldives' original barefoot-luxury island and the prototype the rest of the category was built on. Sprawling jungle villas on a forested Baa Atoll island, a UNESCO biosphere reef on the doorstep, and the Soneva Soul observatory and treetop spa overhead.

The MT Verdict

The original barefoot-luxury island. Three decades on, still the reference point — long jungle villas, a working observatory, and a chocolate room that has aged into something close to legend.

The Villas

Soneva Fushi runs 71 villas in total: 63 jungle and beachfront residences spanning one to nine bedrooms, plus eight one- and two-bedroom Water Retreats on the lagoon side. The signature units are sprawling single-storey thatched pavilions hidden under the palm canopy, almost all with private pools and a dedicated Barefoot Guardian butler.

Dining

The two anchor venues are Out of the Sea, the overwater seafood deck, and Out of the Blue, the pan-Asian sunset perch. Down to Earth handles the open-fire grill side, Mihiree Mithaa runs Maldivian cooking, and Cinema Paradiso is the much-photographed open-air screen built into the beach.

Spa & Wellness

Soneva Soul is the brand-wide wellness platform; on Fushi it includes a treetop spa above the canopy and an in-house observatory programme. Treatments and stargazing are usually billed separately from the villa rate.

Logistics

Transfer is a 30-minute Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane from Velana International Airport, sometimes longer if the route stops at other Baa Atoll resorts on the way. Soneva Fushi sits on Kunfunadhoo island inside the UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve.
