03 new resorts have opened in the Maldives in the first half of 2021. While several more resorts have announced to open their doors this year, delays due to COVID-related issues could mean some of these resorts will push their opening date to 2022 or late.
Maldives Resort Openings — First Half of 2021
In the first half of 2021, three notable luxury resorts opened in the Maldives, marking an important moment for the destination’s continued growth despite the global travel slowdown. Two of these resorts launched within the new Fari Islands development in North Malé Atoll, while another introduced a luxury island retreat just a short speedboat ride from Velana International Airport.
The Maldives continues to attract some of the world’s most respected hospitality brands, and these openings demonstrated the industry’s confidence in the destination’s long-term appeal.
Two of the new resorts — The Ritz-Carlton Maldives and Patina Maldives — opened in the Fari Islands, an integrated luxury destination in North Malé Atoll. The development also includes the Fari Marina Village, a shared hub featuring restaurants, boutiques, beach clubs, and cultural experiences designed for guests across the resort islands.
A third resort brand, Capella Maldives, was also planned for the Fari Islands development as part of the same integrated destination. Alongside the guest experience, the development also includes Fari Village, a dedicated island for resort staff focusing on community, education, and engagement — a concept that was new to the Maldives at the time.
Beyond the Fari Islands project, several other international hospitality brands were also expanding into the Maldives around the same period, including Le Méridien, Avani, and Alila.
Below are the three resorts that opened in the Maldives during the first half of 2021.
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands
Opened: June 2021
Designed by the multi-award-winning Kerry Hill Architects, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands draws inspiration from the natural surroundings of the Indian Ocean, reflecting the movement of water and ocean breezes in its circular architectural design.
The resort features 100 villas, ranging from one- to three-bedroom accommodations. Each villa includes spacious indoor and outdoor living areas, panoramic sliding doors, private sun decks, and infinity pools overlooking either the lagoon or the ocean.
Guests can explore seven dining venues, offering a range of culinary experiences from relaxed beachfront dining to refined international cuisine. The Ritz-Carlton Spa, located over the lagoon, serves as a wellness sanctuary with treatment rooms arranged in a distinctive ring-shaped structure.
Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives
Opened: June 2021
Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives is located in North Malé Atoll, approximately a 30-minute speedboat transfer from Velana International Airport.
The resort offers a diverse range of accommodations designed to cater to couples, families, and groups travelling together. In total, the resort features 59 beach villas and 36 water villas, each inspired by the open and spacious natural landscapes of the Maldives.
Dining at Kuda Villingili highlights a variety of international flavours across multiple restaurants and culinary venues. Guests can also enjoy a wide range of island activities, including surfing, stargazing, marine encounters, sandbank dining experiences, and fishing excursions.
Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
Opened: May 2021
Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, Patina Maldives, Fari Islands introduced a contemporary design philosophy to the Maldives luxury resort landscape.
The resort includes 90 beach and water pool villas alongside 20 Fari Studios, offering modern spaces that blend indoor comfort with the surrounding island environment.
Patina Maldives features 12 dining concepts, presenting a diverse culinary experience where ingredients and creative cooking techniques take centre stage.
The resort is operated by Patina Hotels & Resorts, a hospitality brand launched by the Capella Hotel Group. The concept behind the brand focuses on individuality, creativity, and personalised guest experiences.
A Year of Continued Resort Expansion
The openings of these three resorts highlighted the continued evolution of luxury hospitality in the Maldives. Even during a challenging global travel period, international hotel brands remained confident in the destination’s long-term appeal.
In the years following 2021, additional resorts and new brands continued to expand across the Maldives, further strengthening the archipelago’s position as one of the world’s leading luxury island destinations.
