Vaavu Atoll guide: diving, channels, transfers and who it suits

The Maldives is not one experience. Vaavu is a small, dive-led atoll within easy reach of Malé — famous for its channels and night shark dives, with a quieter, less-developed feel.

MT Index

Vaavu is a diver's atoll first. Small, quiet and close enough to Malé for an easy transfer, it trades resort choice for some of the country's most talked-about channel and shark dives. It's less ideal if you want variety of resorts, nightlife, or a trip where diving isn't central.

Where Vaavu Atoll fits

Vaavu, also called Felidhu, is a small atoll south of Malé and one of the least developed in the central Maldives. It's close enough to the airport for a relatively easy transfer, by speedboat or seaplane depending on the resort.

Its reputation rests almost entirely on diving: a set of well-regarded channels and some of the country's best-known night dives with sharks.

What it's like

With only a handful of resorts and a strong local-island and liveaboard scene, Vaavu feels quieter and more diving-led than the busier atolls.

It's a focused choice — ideal if the water is the point, less so if you want variety on land.
