Seaplane vs domestic transfer in the Maldives, explained

Your resort's location decides how you get there — and that single fact shapes your arrival, your budget and what happens if your flight lands late. Here's how the three transfer types actually work.

Seaplane vs domestic transfer in the Maldives, explained
MT Index

Don't pick a resort on transfer alone, but do go in with your eyes open: if you're booking a seaplane-only resort, get an international flight that lands by early afternoon, or accept an overnight in Malé. If your flight lands late and you want to reach the villa the same night, choose a speedboat or domestic-flight resort.

The three transfer types

Speedboat: for resorts close to Malé (much of North and South Malé Atoll). Runs day or night, so it's the most flexible for late arrivals.

Seaplane: for mid-distance resorts, including most of Baa Atoll. Scenic and lands right at the resort lagoon — but daylight only.

Domestic flight + speedboat: for resorts far from Malé. You fly on a small land-based aircraft to a regional airport (such as Dharavandhoo for Baa), then take a short speedboat. Domestic flights run to a schedule, including the evening.

The daylight-only catch

Seaplanes operate only in daylight, roughly 06:00 to 16:00. As a rule of thumb, your international flight should land by about 15:00 to be confident of a same-day seaplane connection. Land later and you'll likely overnight near the airport — typically at Hulhulé Island Hotel or in Malé/Hulhumalé — and fly out the next morning.

Domestic flights and speedboats aren't bound by daylight in the same way, which is why far or near-Malé resorts can still get you in at night.

Baggage

Seaplanes have tighter limits than your international flight — commonly around 20kg checked plus 5kg hand luggage per person, with excess charged per kilo. Check your resort's transfer terms before you pack.

FAQs

Can I choose between a seaplane and a domestic flight?

Usually not — your resort's location determines the transfer. A resort arranges and prices the transfer it uses.

Do seaplanes fly at night?

No. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, roughly 06:00–16:00. Speedboats and domestic flights can operate later.

What happens if I land late in Malé?

If you arrive too late for a seaplane (broadly after about 15:00), you'll usually overnight near the airport and transfer the next morning — or choose a speedboat/domestic-flight resort to travel the same night.

How much do Maldives transfers cost?

Indicatively in 2026: speedboat ~US$100–490, seaplane ~US$400–850, and domestic flight plus speedboat ~US$300–600 return per adult. Your resort sets the price.

What's the seaplane baggage limit?

Commonly around 20kg checked plus 5kg hand luggage per person, with excess charged per kilo — confirm with your resort.
