Australia’s first ever direct commercial flight to the Maldives touched down at Velana International Airport at dawn this morning, ending a journey that has, until now, required at least one stop in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or the Middle East. The inaugural Maldivian Luxury Escapes Express service, operated by national carrier Maldivian on an Airbus A330-200, was greeted with a traditional water-cannon salute as it taxied onto the apron.
The Flight at a Glance
The route is operated by Maldivian using an Airbus A330-200 wide body, configured with 18 fully lie flat business class seats and 246 economy seats.
Flight Q2957 departs Melbourne Tullamarine at 11:20 pm each Monday evening and arrives at Velana International Airport in Malé at 5:55 am local time the next morning, with a scheduled flight time of 11 hours 35 minutes. The return leg flies out of Malé on Sunday evenings.
That is roughly half the elapsed time of a conventional one stop Melbourne to Malé routing, which typically runs 20 hours or more once connection waits are included.
How to Book
The service is not sold as a standalone seat. The only way to book the flight is through Luxury Escapes, the Australian travel and lifestyle platform, in combination with a Maldives hotel package of at least five nights.
That makes the route closer to a holiday product than a traditional scheduled service. Travellers planning to fly Luxury Escapes Express need to start with the resort package on luxuryescapes.com rather than searching directly on Maldivian’s website or a flight aggregator.
What this Changes for Australian Travellers
Until this week, Australians flying to the Maldives faced one of the longest detours in the long haul market. Even from Melbourne, the country’s closest large international hub to Malé, the standard route involved a Singapore Airlines or Emirates connection that added several hours of layover to the journey.
A weekly nonstop, even one bundled with a hotel stay, reshapes the trip. For peak honeymoon, family, and dive trip windows, it puts the Maldives within a single overnight flight from southern Australia.
The Partnership
The flight launch sits inside a broader push by Visit Maldives Corporation to grow the Australian and New Zealand market. On 15 May 2026, VMC and Luxury Escapes signed a Memorandum of Understanding making Luxury Escapes the destination’s official representative in Australia and New Zealand.
"New direct flights from Melbourne to the Maldives, commencing this week, represent a significant milestone," said Adam Schwab, Co-Founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes. "This new accessibility will drive not only visitation but also destination desirability."
Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO of Visit Maldives Corporation, called Australia "a key focus market for the Maldives" and said the partnership "strengthens our efforts to expand destination visibility."
What Happens after Six Months
The current schedule is a six month trial, subject to regulatory approvals. Maldivian and Luxury Escapes have signalled that the service can be extended depending on demand, and the partnership behind it has also indicated future interest in Sydney and Perth gateways.
