Maldives manta ray season: when and where to see them

Mantas are in the Maldives all year — but the spectacular feeding aggregations follow the monsoon, shifting from one side of the country to the other. Pick the atoll to match the month.

Maldives manta ray season: when and where to see them
MT Index

There is no single 'manta season' for the whole country — there's a season for each side of it. If you're travelling May–November, point at Baa; December–April, point at the western channels and South Ari. Plan dates and atoll together, and never bank on a guaranteed sighting.

Why the season moves

Mantas follow plankton, and plankton follows the monsoon. The wind and currents that concentrate plankton sit on the eastern side of the atolls during the southwest monsoon and the western side during the northeast monsoon. So the best place to see a feeding aggregation changes with the time of year.

Where to go, by season

Southwest monsoon (roughly May–November): eastern atolls, above all Baa Atoll and its Hanifaru Bay, which hosts some of the largest reef-manta gatherings anywhere.

Northeast monsoon (roughly December–April): western reefs and channels, including South Ari Atoll, tend to be more reliable for mantas (and South Ari is also known for year-round whale sharks).

Set expectations

Even in peak season, sightings depend on tides, currents and luck. Cleaning stations offer year-round chances to see mantas being groomed by smaller fish, but the dramatic feeding swarms are seasonal and never guaranteed. Build a trip you'll enjoy regardless, with mantas as the upside.

FAQs

Yes — reef mantas are present year-round, and cleaning stations offer chances in most months. But the large feeding aggregations are seasonal and shift with the monsoon.

When is manta season in Baa Atoll?

Roughly May to November, during the southwest monsoon, when Hanifaru Bay sees its biggest gatherings.

Where are mantas best December to April?

Western reefs and channels, including South Ari Atoll, during the northeast monsoon.

Are manta sightings guaranteed?

No. Even in peak season they depend on tides, currents and plankton. Treat any aggregation as a bonus.
