Hanifaru Bay: manta rays, season and the rules that protect them

Hanifaru is one of the world's great manta-ray gatherings — and one of its most tightly managed. Here's how it works, when to go, and why it should never be the only reason you book.

MT Index

Hanifaru is worth planning a Baa trip around if you understand it as a seasonal, weather-dependent spectacle — not a scheduled attraction. Go in season, book a resort or guesthouse with good Hanifaru access, and treat any big aggregation as a bonus, not a booking promise.

What Hanifaru Bay is

Hanifaru is a small bay off the island of Hanifaru in Baa Atoll. When the southwest monsoon pushes plankton-rich water into the bay and the tide traps it, manta rays arrive to feed — looping and barrel-rolling through the plankton in numbers seen almost nowhere else. Whale sharks occasionally join.

It has been a Marine Protected Area since 2009 and is a core zone of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2011.

When the mantas come

The season runs broadly from May to November, tracking the southwest monsoon, with the biggest aggregations often around August to October. Numbers depend on lunar tides, currents and plankton — which is why no operator can promise a specific day.

Outside the season the bay is quiet; reef mantas are still in the Maldives year-round, but the Hanifaru feeding events are seasonal.

How to visit

You visit by boat from a Baa Atoll resort or from a Dharavandhoo guesthouse, with a licensed guide. Trips run when rangers and guides judge conditions are right, often at short notice, so flexibility matters more than a fixed plan.

FAQs

Can you scuba dive in Hanifaru Bay?

No. Hanifaru is snorkel-only; scuba was banned in 2011 because exhaust bubbles disturb feeding mantas. You can scuba dive at other Baa Atoll sites.

When is the best time to visit Hanifaru Bay?

Roughly May to November, with peak aggregations often around August–October. Conditions change daily and access is regulated, so sightings are never guaranteed.

How long can you spend in the bay?

Visits are capped at about 45 minutes per group, with a licensed guide, and limited numbers of boats and people in the water at once.

Can you guarantee seeing manta rays at Hanifaru?

No. Aggregations depend on tides, currents and plankton. Go in season and treat a big gathering as a bonus, not a guarantee.

How do you get to Hanifaru Bay?

By boat with a licensed guide, from a Baa Atoll resort or a Dharavandhoo guesthouse, when rangers judge conditions are suitable.
