We're visiting in August and whale sharks are our number one priority. Which atoll and which resorts give us the best chance of seeing them?
1 Answer
South Ari Atoll is the only reliable year-round whale shark destination in the Maldives — it's not even close. The stretch between Dhigurah and Maamigili is where 90% of sightings happen. Stay at: LUX* South Ari, Lily Beach, Sun Island, or Vilamendhoo — all are within a short boat ride of the main feeding areas. August is excellent because the southwest monsoon pushes plankton-rich water into the atoll. Most resorts offer daily whale shark excursions ($80-150 per person). Book a resort with an in-house marine biologist who coordinates with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme — they track individual sharks and know where they've been spotted that week. Success rate in South Ari during monsoon season: roughly 85-90% across a 5-night stay.
