5 Things to Do During a Layover in the Maldives

Rayya Ali·3 April 2024·4 min read

Make the most of your layover in the Maldives. Discover the top 5 things to do during a long layover, including a visit to The Marina at CROSSROADS.

Long airport layovers are something most travellers eventually face. In the Maldives, however, a long layover can turn into an unexpected opportunity to explore. If your flight schedule gives you a few extra hours — or even a full day — there are several places near Velana International Airport where you can spend your time.

From visiting nearby islands to exploring local cafés and beaches, here are a few things travellers can consider doing during a layover in the Maldives.

Visit CROSSROADS Maldives

A visit to The Marina at CROSSROADS Maldives can be an easy and enjoyable way to spend a few hours during a layover. Located about 15 minutes from Velana International Airport, the marina is part of one of the Maldives’ first integrated leisure destinations.

Even if you are not staying at one of the resorts within CROSSROADS Maldives, visitors can still explore The Marina area. The waterfront complex offers a variety of restaurants, cafés, shops, and entertainment spaces. Travellers can relax by the sea, enjoy a meal, browse souvenir stores, or learn more about the Maldives’ marine life and history through interactive exhibits.

Explore Malé City

Although many visitors head straight to resort islands, Malé City itself has several interesting places to explore. Located about 15–20 minutes from the airport, the capital is one of the most densely populated islands in the Maldives.

Travellers with extra time can walk through local markets, visit cafés, and see a few of the city’s historic landmarks. Some of the places visitors often explore in Malé include:

The Grand Friday Mosque and the Victory Monument

1. Sultan Park and the National Museum

2. The Fish Market and the Local Market

For those curious about everyday life in the Maldives, Malé offers a different perspective compared to the country’s resort islands.

Visit Hulhumalé

If the capital city feels a little too busy, Hulhumalé offers a quieter alternative. Located just a short drive from the airport, Hulhumalé is a planned urban island known for its wider streets, parks, and beachfront areas.

Travellers can spend time walking through Central Park, relaxing at a beach café, or simply enjoying the ocean views along the island’s long shoreline. Hulhumalé also has several cafés and small restaurants where visitors can stop for a meal or coffee during their layover.

For those with a little more time, the island also offers watersports and beach activities.

Spend a Beach Day in Villingili

For travellers with a longer layover — especially one lasting a full day — a trip to Villingili Island can offer a peaceful escape.

Located about 20 minutes from Malé, Villingili is accessible by ferry from the capital. Unlike the busy streets of Malé, the island has no motorised vehicles, giving it a relaxed and quiet atmosphere.

The beaches are popular among locals and visitors alike, and the island is often used as a picnic destination. Travellers exploring Villingili may also notice one of the island’s unique features — a large population of friendly cats that roam the neighbourhoods.

A simple picnic with Maldivian short eats and drinks can make for a pleasant beach day before continuing your journey.

Try Local Maldivian Food

Another enjoyable way to spend a layover is by trying local Maldivian cuisine. While resorts offer their own interpretations of Maldivian dishes, travellers can experience more traditional flavours in cafés and small restaurants around Malé.

Local eateries known as “hotaa” serve a variety of Maldivian short eats and snacks throughout the day. One well-known spot is Magukolhu Hotaa, where visitors can try traditional breakfast dishes and local favourites.

Restaurants around the Carnival area in Malé also serve local food, often at affordable prices. Visitors can enjoy authentic Maldivian breakfasts and snacks for just a few dollars.

Making the Most of a Layover

While the Maldives is famous for its island resorts and turquoise lagoons, even a short layover near Malé can offer a glimpse into local life and culture. With several destinations located within 20 minutes of Velana International Airport, travellers have more options than they might expect.

With a bit of planning, a long layover in the Maldives can become a memorable part of the journey rather than just time spent waiting at the airport.
