Maldives on a Budget: Guesthouse Islands Guide

MT Editorial·9 min read

Local guesthouses on inhabited islands from $80/night — and the bikini-friendly beaches nearby.

At a Glance
  • Top guesthouse islands: Maafushi, Rasdhoo, Thulusdhoo, Ukulhas
  • Bikini beaches: Designated areas adjacent to most guesthouse islands
  • Budget range: $80–180/night for a guesthouse double room
  • Getting there: Domestic ferry (slow but cheap) or speedboat transfer
  • Best for: Diving, snorkelling, local food, independent travel

The guesthouse model in the Maldives has undergone a genuine transformation since local island tourism was formally permitted in 2010. The earliest guesthouses were basic family operations offering a clean room and breakfast. By 2026, the better properties on islands like Maafushi, Rasdhoo, and Ukulhas offer rooftop pools, dive centres, direct booking platforms, and dinner menus that draw favourable reviews against all but the lower tier of resort dining.

Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll remains the most developed and convenient guesthouse destination, primarily because of its proximity to Malé — a 35-minute speedboat ride. The density of accommodation choice (over 40 guesthouses at last count) means competition has kept rates honest: a solid double room with air conditioning, a pool, and breakfast runs $90–130 per night. The trade-off is density; Maafushi in peak season is genuinely busy, and the small street running the length of the island can feel crowded.

The guesthouse circuit has matured enough that you can now do the Maldives for $150–200 per person per day, all-in, and not feel like you're compromising on the destination.

For travellers willing to travel a little further, Rasdhoo in North Ari Atoll offers a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere with an excellent house reef for snorkelling and proximity to the South Ari whale shark aggregation zone. Ukulhas, a thirty-minute speedboat trip from Rasdhoo, is smaller and quieter still, with a reputation for particularly well-maintained guesthouse options and one of the better bikini beaches in the country.

The bikini beach question deserves a direct answer: local islands in the Maldives are Muslim communities and modest dress is expected in public. However, the tourism economy has led most guesthouse islands to designate a specific 'bikini beach' — typically a sandbank or a section of beach slightly separated from the residential community — where resort-standard swimwear is appropriate. Your guesthouse will point you to it. This is not a compromise; in several cases, the designated bikini beaches are among the most beautiful stretches of sand in the entire country.
